The foundation has been set for the Chris Kyle Memorial Statue in Odessa, Texas.

Kyle is an Odessa native and the construction of the statue is the town’s way to remember the US Navy Seal who was murdered in 2013. The foundation alone weighs 40,000 lbs.

The total cost of construction for the project is $400,000. Another $100,000 is still needed in order to complete the final stages. The town hopes to raise enough money to have the memorial, that can be seen at the Veterans Clinic on South Highway 191, finished in time to unveil this Memorial Day.

Kirk Edwards, Chairman of the Chris Kyle Memorial Task Force says, “it’s going to be a piece of art for us to have in West Texas, for people, and veterans, and all of us to be proud of for many years to come.”

Chris Kyle served four tours in Iraq and was awarded many commendations for his acts of heroism. He was honorably discharged in 2009 and released his best-selling autobiography, American Sniper, in 2012. After his death American Sniper was adapted into a film by Clint Eastwood.

In 2015, Texas Governor Greg Abbot declared February 2 “Chris Kyle Day.”

If you’d like to donate to the project you can do so on the Odessa Chamber of Commerce website.
